Women in transport

Women make up 47 per cent of the UK workforce yet remain underrepresented in the transport sector accounting for only 20 per cent of workers. At HCT Group, we want to play our part in empowering women to have successful careers in the transport industry. We do this by creating a positive, supportive environment for all our employees – and female colleagues in particular. Meet some of our champions for women in transport.

Denise, bus driver, Bristol

For Denise, being a driver is much more than just getting behind the wheel – she gets to know her passengers and sees what a difference our services make.

Denise loves getting to know her passengers, helping them from week to week, or going on day trips in the summer.

‘I’ve been driving for HCT Group in Bristol for around 10 years. I started as a volunteer, but then a paid role came up and I decided to go for it. I drive on our Group Transport service and our Dial-a-Ride service.

‘Some people don’t go out from one week to the next, so they look forward to you coming. It’s nice getting to know passengers – some of them I’ve known for years.

‘We do day trips in summer – we go to Weston-Super-Mare, or garden centres, or Cheddar – and make a day of it. People make new friends on those trips, it’s lovely.

‘Day to day, we have a laugh and a joke. There’s a good team here in Bristol. If you’re thinking about applying…? I’d say go for it! It’s really rewarding.’
