This year, Cardiff’s famous Bute Park hosted the 17th edition of the Homeless World Cup and Bristol Community Transport (BCT) provided minibus service between Bristol Airport and Cardiff. More than 500 players representing over 50 countries traveled to Cardiff between July 27 – August 3 to attend the week-long festival of football.
The Homeless World Cup gives homeless people across the world the opportunity to be part of a tournament that requires teamwork, discipline and commitment. The Homeless World Cup also challenges the stigma around homelessness and research has shown an improvement in attitudes from audience members during matches.
BCT used its environmentally-friendly bio-methane gas buses that launched last month to transport passengers.
HCT Group heard through Social Enterprise UK that Homeless World Cup were looking for volunteers to provide transport for the event and contacted BCT to make it happen.
“We are proud to support the Homeless World Cup. It’s a great initiative and for an important cause and we were honored to give players a warm welcome when they arrived and transport them safely to their destination,” said Dai Powell, CEO of HCT Group.
