Get around Leeds in YourCar!
Posted: 03 Dec 2009
HCT Group and Leeds Alternative Travel (LAT) are delighted to announce the launch of YourCar. This innovative new scheme has been specifically designed to help people in Leeds with mobility problems get around the city safely, affordably and in comfort.
YourCar is a membership scheme that has an annual charge of £1. Membership is open to anyone who has difficulties in using public transport or other methods of getting around Leeds. YourCar is a special, subsidised, door-to-door taxi service staffed by drivers and employees who are individually trained in assisting people with mobility issues. All YourCar drivers are all fully CRB checked. All YourCar vehicles are fitted with state of the art accessibility features so that everyone’s needs, including those of wheelchair users, can be catered for.
Donna Dixon, Manager of LAT and the creator of the scheme, said: “We are really pleased to be able to bring this important service to the people of Leeds. I’d heard so much feedback from local people I’ve worked with over the years, who said that what they really needed was a service that was completely flexible to their needs and not prohibitively expensive. Consequently we designed YourCar, and to see the launch of the service today is great news for local people.
It can be really difficult for some people to use other forms of transport. Particular issues for many people include obtaining assistance to get in and out of vehicles and a lack of confidence in trying to navigate their way around our very busy city. YourCar is a service specifically designed with these people in mind.”
LAT is well known in the city for providing much needed specialist and community transport, and related training services, and became part of the award-winning HCT Group in 2008. The merger was designed to help LAT deliver more user-designed services that make a real difference to the quality of life of local people.
